Secrets to Implementing Best Practices

David Cook - President, Management Research & Solutions Inc

Paul Smith - Principal, Management Research & Solutions Inc

Program Description

Having great ideas is one thing...getting people motivated to participate in making them real is something else altogether. Managers know what employees should be doing, have best practice processes available, but what they don’t have is employee buy-in. Other companies do gain agreement with key staff and then...nothing happens.

Getting people excited about making changes requires enthusiasm, encouragement. Leadership must stand strongly behind the idea for change to take hold and last over time.

Good change management involves planning, coaching, mentoring and training, delivered in doses to keep people motivated, participative and accountable. Absent any of these elements, a change initiative will likely fail. But done right, virtually anything can be achieved.

Upgrading Substation Grounding System

Mehrdad Boloorchi, Wardrop Engineering Inc

Program Description

Expansion of transmission and distribution (T&D) networks, aging of substation equipment and the need for modernization and automation require upgrading and replacing substations equipment. Considering changes in fault level because of T&D system expansion and new interconnections, and considering the changes in applicable safety standards and their requirements, it is very important to evaluate the grounding system of the substations and, if required, to upgrade the grounding system.

Grounding system upgrade shall be performed before starting the substation equipment replacement and upgrade to provide a safe working place for People involving in substation upgrade and also for O&M crews.

This presentation will address the unsafe conditions in substation grounding system, method of evaluating these conditions and methods of elimination these unsafe conditions and providing a safe and standard grounding system.

Improving Smart Grid Security by Enabling an IT Governance, Risk and Compliance Strategy

Doug Powell - CPP, PSP - Manager, SMI Security, Privacy & Safety, BC Hydro

Terence Lee - Managing Director, North America, Modulo

Program Description

With more than 4000 vulnerabilities across the interconnected smart grid environment, security may seem unmanageable. The adversary only needs one entry point to wreak havoc. This session will unfold a smart grid security program using a Governance, Risk and Compliance management lifecycle approach. Through effective GRC strategy distributors can identify what is critical to the sustained delivery of electricity and apply effective policy and standards to mitigate risk. include audit and legal fees, regulatory fines such as NERC, customer privacy breaches, and lost revenues. Anything less than a comprehensive, defense-in-depth protection plan for smart grid is insufficient and prone to higher failure rates.
